Valero is a publicly traded American corporation owned by its shareholders. Founded in San Antonio, Texas in 1980, the company derives its name from the city's most famous landmark. Originally called Mission San Antonio de Valero when it was established in 1718, it is better known to most people as the Alamo.
Valero has grown from a regional energy company with a single refinery to North America's largest refiner. In addition to gasoline and distillates, Valero produces other products in its geographically diverse network of refineries to help improve consumer's lives. These include asphalt for the paving and roofing industries, lube base oils to support manufacturing, petroleum coke for power generation and cement, sulfur for the agricultural sector, and aromatic solvents and propylene to the chemical industry for processing into such products as paints, plastic and adhesives.
While long recognized as a leading producer of some of the world's cleanest fuels, Valero is also one of the nation's leading marketers. Valero made its retail debut in 2000 when the company acquired a California refinery along with 80 retail sites and 270 branded wholesale locations throughout California. Valero's acquisition of Ultramar Diamond Shamrock Corp. in 2001 expanded its retail and branded wholesale network significantly, as have the company's recent wholesale expansions throughout the U.S. Since 2002, the company has more than doubled the number of its branded wholesale locations, adding 574 new sites in 2007 alone.
Today, Valero's network is comprised of approximately 5,800 retail and wholesale branded outlets in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean operating under various brand names including Valero, Diamond Shamrock, Shamrock, Ultramar and Beacon. As we continue to aggressively grow our branded wholesale business, sites that meet our premier requirements will be converted to the Valero brand coast to coast. We also offer two value brand options for sites that do not meet our premier brand requirement, but still desire the basic benefits of a branded program. The first, called Shamrock, is available to marketers in our Northern and Southern regions, while Beacon is the value brand of choice in our California region.
